The first evidence of its therapeutic utility dates back to
reign of Emperor Sheng-Nung in China (year 2737 BC), who collects in pharmacopoeia manuscripts its usefulness for treating cramps, rheumatic and menstrual pain.

In ancient Egypt, numerous papyri also describe the administration of cannabis preparations in the treatment of various ailments.

But in Europe, it is not until the nineteenth century when cannabis becomes a common medicine and legal use for its usefulness in the treatment of pain, seizures, spasms and emesis. However, in 1925 the Genoa Convention includes cannabis and hashish in the list of illegal and dangerous drugs.

Cannabis sativa contains more than 460 different chemical compounds, of which more than 60 are grouped under the term “cannabinoids”, which refers to substances that have a carbocyclic structure of 21 carbons. In 1964, Gaoni and Mechoulam isolate and determine the structure of the principal responsible for the psychoactive properties of the plant, ∆9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (∆9-THC), and in 1988, Devane et al. discover the specific receptor of this cannabinoid, the CB1 receptor. These findings have allowed to discover and characterize in the last 20 years an endogenous signaling system known as the endocannabinoid system. This system exerts its modulating role mainly in the brain but also in the periphery, and consists of receptors, ligands (endogenous, phytocannabinoids or synthetics) and enzymes responsible for their synthesis and degradation.

The human body is a very complex machine; We still don’t know how it works completely. One of the body’s systems that has been receiving a lot of attention lately, is the endocannabinoid system, and the way in which CBD interacts with it.

When it comes to things like stress, anxiety, pain and inflammation, people generally think that the brain’s neurotransmitters, and the central nervous system, have a monopoly on them. However, research has discovered another system that plays an important role in the regulation of these emotional and physiological states. This system is the endocannabinoid system. Today we are going to take a look at what it is, and how it interacts with the CBD.

WHAT IS THE ENDOCANABINOID SYSTEM?


The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors that extend throughout the body, practically all the parts reached by the central nervous system. As the name implies, the endocannabinoid system is what the many cannabinoids found in cannabis interact with. In addition, and it is quite interesting, regardless of the natural equivalents that the body produces by itself, there is no other natural source of cannabinoids apart from cannabis. It is believed that the endocannabinoid system plays a very large role within the body, as research indicates that it is also involved in the regulation of the immune system, inflammation and many other processes – in addition to those already mentioned in the introduction.

THE CBD AND THE RECEIVERS


The endocannabinoid system is composed of a network of receptors of two types. CB1 and CB2 receptors. Unlike THC, which can bind to CB1 receptors, CBD cannot bind to anyone perfectly. The result is a stimulated activity without a link occurring. This means that any cell that contains a CB1 or CB2 receptor will change by interaction with the CBD, and since these receptors are found in virtually every part of the body, including the brain, the effects of the change occur throughout the system. This method of interaction is to a great extent to be thanked for the effects they feel when taking a CBD supplement.

If something is showing us cannabis research, we still have a lot to learn about the human body. The study of cannabis continues to find new and interesting ways in which we can potentially benefit from this extraordinary plant, with CBD and the endocannabinoid system being one of its main themes.

The endocannabinoid system plays a very interesting and varied role within the human body. A decade ago, it was believed that the brain and the central nervous system were the main driving forces responsible for conditions such as stress, anxiety, inflammation and pain. Although this is not disputed, more recent research indicates that there is a third party that also participates in the fight against these conditions: the endocannabinoid system.

 WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?


In its most basic form, the endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors that extend throughout the body – almost in the same way as the central nervous system. These receptors interact specifically with cannabinoids, creating the effects that result from the use of marijuana. But it is not only designed to place you. Studies have shown that there is very positive evidence that the endocannabinoid system is essential for the regulation of many bodily functions. This includes aspects such as the immune system, inflammation, pain and energy homeostasis – to name a few. Also, interestingly, apart from the natural equivalents of the cannabinoids produced by the organism, there is no known other natural source of cannabinoids than marijuana. It is as if it were your destiny!

Although the endocannabinoid system is the main point of interaction with CBD, it is not the only one. So we believe it is worth mentioning quickly the other ways in which CBD interacts with the body. This additional interaction is caused by CBD stimulation on other receptors. For example, CBD is believed to activate serotonin receptors. It also stimulates G protein receptors that affect temperature control and pain perception.

The endocannabinoid system is important for your health and balance in general, but its importance is that the medical community has not understood it until recently. It is through this system that the natural cannabinoids of CBD oil interact with our bodies and trigger their many beneficial effects. Because of the way it affects the way our bodies function, a healthy endocannabinoid system is essential and it is essential that we learn how to maintain it.

THE ENDOCANABINOIDS AS THEY REACT IN THE BODY


Endocannabinoids are created in response to the needs within the larger physiological system and are used for the body’s regulatory functions. They act on presynaptic cells to control the volume to which communication signals are sent. This is how endocannabinoids affect the duration and intensity of the wide range of physiological processes under its control.

RISK OF OVERDOSE WITH CANNABINOIDS


While the endocannabinoid system is linked to several important processes and is concentrated in the brain, nervous system and reproductive organs, it does not affect the regions of the brain that control cardiac and pulmonary function. This feature is one of the main reasons why fatal cannabinoid overdoses do not occur.

ENDOCANABINOIDS FOR THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES



Dronabinol and nabilone are two CB receptor agonists that are currently in use. So are Sativex, which is a cannabis extract, and rimonabant, a CB receptor antagonist. Both are synthetic cannabinoids that have limited scope as therapeutic elements.

 

It is the phytocannabinoids, coming from the whole plant, that are offering better results, thanks to the entourage effect that the rest of its elements carry, such as flavonoids and terpenes.

The use of cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes is still under investigation in many countries. However, in the pharmacies of the Netherlands, it is possible to acquire raw cannabis. In this case, cannabis is regulated and its production is controlled and supervised by the Dutch Ministry of Health.

In countries like Spain. Belgium and some regions of Switzerland also tolerate the therapeutic use of cannabis in small doses. Also in the United States, some states have legalized the medicinal use of cannabis and in Canada, citizens have the possibility of using cannabis for therapeutic purposes as long as it is purchased in the indicated establishments previously established by the government.

The use of cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes remains a great unknown in medical consultations and among alternative medicinal treatments. However, the cases mentioned in countries in Europe, the United States and Canada demonstrate that the use of cannabinoids can have successful medicinal effects.

CONCLUSION AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE


Understanding that the endocannabinoid system is within the evolution of the mammal kingdom we can simply deduce the need to keep it active, every day more in our environment we are exposed to interaction with the environment of various types, where we are encouraged to use our energy for survival, healing process, recovery, enjoyment and degradation over the years. Now, how can we maintain stable health over time? How can we overcome the threshold of fear and find natural solutions for our moments of life and carry out a whole routine of life without so many difficulties? The answer every day is clearer, and it is about the CANNABINOIDS and their interaction with our homeostatic system and the endocannabinoid system, which is none other than the one that regulates the entire physical-chemical balance with which we can cope with daily life, it is precisely with which we connect to the nature from which we come as part of the animal kingdom, as part of the universe.

I have personally been able to experience it, and it is one of the most elusive sensations that I have lived, which is why I have had this initiative regarding this fascinating project and my connection to the world of CANNABINOIDS, the sensation of being able to feel a quick relief, comforting, natural, fast and effective solution to my personal health problems has been fabulous, it has given my body the necessary time to recover and heal learning from their own abilities, I have one more universe to discover, each day continuing and making this passion an inspiring role model for all who want to get into this knowledge and experience.

    I have always found it difficult to understand and appreciate the way the brain and the central nervous system coordinate the issues of pain and inflammation. But with the way you explained the endocannabinoid system as a network of receptors, extending throughout the body. It becomes easier to comprehend the way they pick signals of pain.

  3. To be honest I hadn’t heard a lot about the endocannabinoid system until coming across your post here. As a CBD enthusiast this information is not only helpful but also interesting as well. I didn’t know that the history dated so far back in China. Cannabinoids may very well be the answer we’ve been looking for in order to maintain stable health over time.   4. This is interesting. I did not know that cannabis was used to treat menstrual cramps back in China, for a very good reason though. Cramps can be painful. I have never heard of endocannabinoid system before. I am familiar with CBD and THC but wow there are so much behind them. I did not know that there are the differences between CBD1 and CBD@ receptors. 

    How do we know that we overdose on CBD? I am a user myself and there is no warning on the label about consumption. This is scary, I can take as much as I can to ease the pain. I still think that cannabinoid is way better that the over the counter medicine though.

      About the dosses, is all about of course what are you using the CBD for, but any way, the best is to start with a small amount, 2 drops x 3 times a day, and increase to get to the sweet CBD point than make feell great.

    Really interesting topic and the new findings in the use of cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes is giving some astonishing results.  It needs a lot of research and medical validation on the subject.  

    But if cannabinoids are giving good results in treating various diseases in humans as well as in animals, it should be welcomed.  

    And if it is positively impacting the endocannabinoid system, we can get better results in increasing and strengthening the immune system, appetite and metabolism, memory and so on.

      I try it my self, day after day, and in the middle long therm is really worthed, even when I stop using it for a while the effects I feel them for a while on my basic health obstacles, this is something we should always have close to our daily life.

  7. Thanks for this great informative article about the endocannabinoid system, this is a universe I am stil discovering. I am always learning about new solutions for health issues and medical CBD has an infinite universe of applications, I didn’t try it so far but I intend to.

    Cannabis is now being largely cultivated in Portugal to be used by pharmaceutical industry!

    The endocannabinoid system is not yet completely understood, we still have a lot to learn about this amazing machine that is our human body.
